Lisa Atwood

Lisa Atwood is an honour-roll student. Petite with classic good looks, Lisa dresses in designer clothes and would never wear anything as outrageous as Stevie, but she does admire her individuality. Lisa struggles to overcome the ‘good girl’ image and is eager to take on new challenges to prove her strength and stamina.

Lisa starts out riding Patch, the perfectly trained ‘push-button’ school pony at Pine Hollow. Eventually she graduates to riding Prancer, the chestnut thoroughbred mare. Lisa is determined to make a show jumper out of the ex-racehorse, but the blue ribbon remains elusive.

Because her mother, Eleanor, lives her life through Lisa, she wants her daughter to be the best at everything. Thus, Lisa is a classic over-achiever and perfectionist. She is always striving to be that little bit better than everybody else is so although she is a loyal friend to Carole and Stevie, there is always that edge of rivalry between them to keep things interesting. And this announces itself more in the second series, because Lisa’s equestrian skills have developed to where they rival, if not overtake, those of her companions who have been riding longer. Lisa gets on well with boys and her confidence was given an extra boost when teenage heartthrob, Skye Ransom, took a special interest in Lisa while filming at Pine Hollow. She never guessed her first kiss would be with a movie star. Boys really respond to her, because she is such a good listener about any problem they might have. And the advice she gives is always spot-on.

Lisa’s mother is a determined social climber and she sees the horse world as a way of her daughter being accepted into the ‘right’ circles. As well as the riding lessons, Lisa takes ballet, clarinet, art and tennis classes and she is envious of girls who can go home after school and just veg. out. Lisa’s younger sister, Melanie, has now been enrolled at Pine Hollow and unfortunately for Lisa, this means she will always be underfoot.

Lisa has grown from her initial insecure start at Pine Hollow to being an integral part of the place with close bonds with Stevie and Carole.

Lara Marshall ( Plays Lisa )

Using a hair brush as a pretend microphone, Lara would practice singing in front of the mirror when she was seven, dreaming about the world of show business. Her love affair with the arts started when as a four year old she saw her first stage production. The show finished but she refused to leave the theatre, sitting transfixed with the magic.

Her experience has been diverse, starting with the lamb in Charlotte’s Web, a Kidz for Kidz production, singing and dancing in Babes in Toyland for People’s Playhouse and the coveted role of Young Eponine in Les Miserables, in Cameron Mackintosh’s 10th Anniversary presentation. She has played the lead in a number of school productions, including Phantom of the Toll Booth and her favourite subjects were not surprisingly Drama and English.

Since the airing of The Saddle Club, Lara is now a known face which causes quite a commotion when young fans recognise her locally. Her acceptance of this is very professional. “It’s easy to be nice to your fans because they are so happy to see someone they know from television; you are like a friend to them because they like your character so much. I try to be just myself when I talk to them because it’s silly not to be natural,” Lara says.

Sport plays a big part in Lara’s life. As well as horse-riding, she has her Bronze Medallion at Surf Life Saving, is good at cross country running and sails most weekends with her father, as well as having her own sail boat.

An animal lover, she has two dogs Elvis and Priscilla, a guinea pig and Gladiator the cat. Visual Art is a strong interest and her painting of Britney Spears was hung at school. Lara enjoyed the support of her school friends with her acting forays. “At first some of the girls may have been a little jealous but then they realised that this is my dream; they will all have their own dreams but this is mine,” she explains.

Lisa is a really organised person. I wouldn’t wear the same clothes she does and Lisa certainly wouldn’t do some of the wacky things I do with my hair. She has a big heart and she gets hurt easily. She is always there for her friends and she is utterly devoted to the club. I can imagine being friends with someone like Lisa.

The Saddle Club™ series stars three heroines, Stevie, Carole and Lisa, who form The Saddle Club™ at the Pine Hollow Stables. Each character has a distinctly different personality but all share an equal love of horses and a strong loyalty to each other.
